With profound sadness the family of Joseph Howes announce his unexpected passing on 8/5/26 at the age of 79. A resident of Fountain Hills, Joe was a cherished Father, Big Pop Pop, Uncle, and friend whose sudden absence leaves a deep void in the hearts of all who knew him.
Joe was an active member and volunteer at the Fountain Hills Garden always giving his time to help things grow around him. He was a larger than life presence filled with love, laughter and a kind, caring heart which he shared unconditionally with all who crossed his path. Comfortable in his own skin, he prioritized his family and friends as well as the communities he called ‘home’. He found fulfillment through enriching the lives of everyone.
Born on March 17, 1947 in Hilo, Hawaii to a military family and raised in Southern California, he joined the Air Force after high school to “see the world”. With a great sense of curiosity and adventure he traveled this world from Alaska through Canada, the East Coast, and Ireland always saying ‘yes’ to new adventures. Joe loved music and live concerts (although heading back west, he missed Woodstock by a week). He had a rare, infectious zest for life and loved that the world celebrated his birthday on St. Patrick’s Day. He loved good food and held a special place in his heart for cake and ice cream (his mother made the best) and a good pour of Irish Whisky. He toasted to life every day. Joe loved the outdoors and nature especially living on West Pond, Maine with his late wife Denise. He turned westward to be close to family and settled in Fountain Hills, exploring Arizona’s wonders, art fairs, making gourd masks, and painting. Picnicking with family, swimming with the kids, and just plain giving all his love to everyone.
Joe leaves behind his beautiful daughters Sarah and husband Alex, Heidi and grandson Jesse, brothers Roger, Bob and his wife Sandie, former sister-in-law Natalie and her husband Brian, his nieces and nephews that span multiple generations and his devoted partner Sher. He was preceded in death by his Mother Viola, and nephew Rob Howes. Joe’s warmth, laughter, LOVE, and generous spirit will live on in our hearts forever.
