John F. Leonardi Jr., a longtime winter resident of Fountain Hills, passed away on Jan. 3, 2013, at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix.

Born in Highland Park, Ill., John was the second oldest of six children and the only son. He graduated from Marmion Academy in Aurora, Ill.; Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis.; and John Marshall Law School in Chicago, Ill.

Rather than join the family business, Leonardi Enterprises, John struck out on his own, working for Pioneer Title Company before co-founding Mid-America Title Company, located in Waukegan, Ill. He retired from Mid-America in 1988 and led an active life until the end.

His favorite hobby was woodcarving and he was active in several wood-carving organizations including the Arizona Woodcarvers Association, which he co-founded.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Emily; children, John F. Leonardi III (wife Lyndie), and Marisa Leonardi (husband Gerard); stepsons, Michael Simpson (wife Shelley), Scott Rose (wife Shannon), and Mark Rose; and 10 grandchildren.

In accordance with his wishes, he was cremated at Allen Funeral Home in Mesa. A memorial event will be held in Illinois later this year.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Lung Association.
