James “Scottie” Reid, age 87, passed on June 5, 2016 in Fountain Hills after battling cancer.

Scottie was born in Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland on Sept. 11, 1928. Scottie immigrated to the U.S. in 1955 living in Chicago and meeting his wife Bette there.

He opened Scottie Reid’s Southwest Designs in Scottsdale after moving to Arizona in 1970. Scottie was a master craftsman in wood and was named a “Master of the Southwest” by Phoenix Home & Gardens Magazine.

Scottie was preceded in death by his loving wife, Bette and son, Squire. He is survived by his brother and sister who reside in Peeples, Scotland; his daughter, Roberta (Bobbie) Reid; step-daughter Marianne Marko and his business partner and son-in-law, Ron Harris who all live in Fountain Hills.

Scottie’s trademark style started with hand drawn designs, works of art themselves, turned into hand chiseled and made furniture and fittings for homes, restaurants and country clubs. He was a true artist incorporating design elements from “the old country” to meld with the American Southwest design elements which he loved in a signature style.

Scottie was well known and respected by the Valley design community and building trades for the imaginative details included in his work as well as his wit. Scottie was deeply loved and will be missed by all.

Scottie will be interred alongside his beloved wife, Bette and son, Squire at Paradise Memorial Gardens Cemetery and Mausoleum during a private service in Scottsdale.
