The weather has certainly fooled all of us so far this year. But we’re not complaining.
Diane and I went up to Canyon Lake for a few days last week in our RV. I had listened to three local weather forecasters before I left to get a feel for how the weather would be Wednesday through Friday.
Not one of them was predicting rain for the period. Two of them said there was a chance of sprinkles but hurricane Amanda appeared to be heading out to the west into the Pacific and should not be a threat to land, they said.

We arrived at the campground at about 1:50 p.m. on Wednesday. There were about a half a dozen units in the upper portion of the campground by where we were.
That first day was a little on the warm side, about 100 degrees.
Our friends, Frank and Janie Kainrath, pulled into the parking lot about 3:45 p.m., just in time for our happy hour.
They had originally planned to spend the night in a tent on our campsite, but Frank recently started a job at a firm on Laser Drive, and he had be at work at 7:30 the next morning. We played a card game and grilled some ribs and vegetables before they left to drive back to Fountain Hills.
On Friday the clouds began to roll in and a big gust of wind blew in just about dinner time. It was moisture from remnants of hurricane Amanda. It just sprinkled on Thursday evening, but Friday morning we were awakened at 6 a.m. by lightning and loud thunder.
Then the rain started. It absolutely poured. The parking lot looked like a continuation of the lake.
It was June 5th, a day during which there had never been rainfall recorded in the Phoenix area in the history of the U.S. Weather Service.
That record fell by the wayside as Phoenix had .03 inches at the airport. We had .26 inches at The Times office.
June is normally the driest month of the year, but the remnants of another hurricane, Blanca, was bringing even more rain to the state this week.
And Monday, June 15, is the official start of the Monsoon season. I guess Target will be selling plenty of umbrellas this year.
Prior to leaving for Canyon Lake on Wednesday, Diane and I attended the monthly meeting of the Parkinson’s Support Group at the Community Center.
The guest speaker was local chiropractor Dr. Nick Schultz. The title of his talk was “Falling is not an option.” Diane wanted to hear that talk since I suffered considerably from a recent fall and she has told me to never do it again.
He told of ways to make your home environment more fall resistant. He said a person should consider installing bars on the inside walls. Better night lighting should be considered for those who have to go to the bathroom during the night.
The removal of all rugs should be a consideration. They are a major contributor to fall statistics.
Another contributor to falls is pets. Many like to get in the way of your walking or lying down in your path.
He said hydration is important in fall prevention. The amount of water intake daily should be equal in ounces to half your body weight.
And you should regularly check your blood pressure.
As I found out, low blood pressure can cause you to pass out.
