Give a Lift drivers rally with rides for cancer treatment….

Recently a Fountain Hills resident called me, the town’s Give a Lift transportation coordinator, stating that she no longer has transportation of any kind -- other than an occasional friend here or there and was now dealing with facial cancer and the lengthy treatments to follow.

She needed 30 round- trip rides to the Virginia Piper Cancer Center. My first thought was, “Wow, we’ll never be able to get that many rides for one person in a condensed time.”

I was not only doubting that we could help this resident fully during the busy holidays and with many drivers still out of town, I was feeling a bit overwhelmed with the number of rides requested.

I placed the request for the 30 round trip rides on the town website, www.fh.az.gov/volunteeropps, and soon after received emails from drivers saying that they would help with two or three…even four rides.

It was so impressive how 14 volunteer drivers came through to help this resident with not only all 30 rides for treatment but also substitute drivers.

The volunteers in Fountain Hills are generous and kind and terrific. My doubts have been restored with renewed faith in the spirit of volunteerism that lives and shines in Fountain Hills.
