Fountain Hills veterans invited to fly

Honor Flight Arizona begins its fall 2024 flying season Wednesday, Sept. 11, coinciding with Patriot Day.

This season’s trip dates are Sept. 11-13, Sept. 24-26, Oct. 9-11 and Oct. 23-25.

The veterans on the first trip include four Korean War veterans, 24 Vietnam War veterans and three who served in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. The most senior veteran is a 94-year-old.

The second trip will include a WWII veteran who earned a Silver Star in the battle of Iwo Jima and a female veteran who served during the Korean War will join the third flight.

The final trip of the season brings a pair of brothers who served during the Vietnam War.

“It’s great to continue serving all of our veterans by taking them on a trip of a lifetime,” said Rick Hardina, president of Honor Flight Arizona. “We’re working as quickly as we can to take these men and women to see their memorials.”

Since inception, Honor Flight Arizona has flown more than 3,100 WWII, Korean War and Vietnam War veterans from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport to Washington D.C. to see their memorials, according to a press release.

Honor Flight Arizona took its first flight of 11 WWII veterans in November 2009.

Trips have also included nearly 2,200 guardians who assist the veterans along the way.

Veterans from WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War are invited to sign up for their free Honor Flight online at honorflightaz.org/veterans.

Honor Flight Arizona is part of the nationwide Honor Flight Network.

Both are 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations able to do this work because of private donations and corporate support.
