Home schoolers collect mobility devices for Africa

For the second year, the Fountain Hills Gifted Hands Homeschool Interact Club is collecting mobility aids in conjunction with Noon Rotary Club and Four Peaks Rotary Club.

The students are accepting crutches, wheelchairs, canes, walkers without wheels and leg braces.

The donations will be given to Crutches 4 Africa, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. Crutches 4 Africa is an international effort to gather old and new mobility devices for reuse in Africa and other developing countries.

The mobility devices are distributed free to individuals with physical challenges, regardless of race, gender, tribe, age or religion. Many recipients have survived polio, accidents or acts of violence.

More than 3 million people in underdeveloped countries are stricken with diseases that leave them crippled.

Items can be left from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Mondays only, at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, classrooms 5 and 6, 16150 E. El Lago Blvd.

The other drop-off location is the Boys & Girls Club McKee Branch, 14605 N. Del Cambre Ave.

Lucas Splittorff said the last pickup will be Feb. 20. All donations from similar Rotary clubs will be consolidated in a shipping container to Africa.

Monetary funds also are accepted to cover the shipping expenses for the container and distribution costs.
