Groundwater Management Act isn’t yet meeting overdraft goals for Arizona’s major population centers

Arizona’s Groundwater Management Act of 1980 set goals to stop the overdraft of groundwater in the Phoenix, Tucson and Prescott areas by 2025.

Less than a month and a half from that date, that goal is still a long way off.

That goal has become increasingly important, Arizona State University water researchers argued in a 2021 report, with the state now receiving cuts in its allocation of Colorado River water due to shortages on the river.
