Golf team claims big wins

The Fountain Hills High School golf team pulled off not one, but two first place victories in the past week’s matches.

The Falcons’ first meet was at home at the Desert Canyon Golf Course on March 26 against Northwest Christian. FHHS beat Northwest Christian by 40 strokes with their top golfer, Ben Danko, carding a +4.

The next day Fountain Hills traveled north up the Beeline to play a meet in Payson, where they also faced Holbrook and Miami. The Falcons won the meet by 32 strokes and the top golfer was sophomore Alex Schafer, who shot -2.

FHHS golf had two meets this week. The first was on Monday, April 1, away at Northwest Christian along with Horizon Honors and Odyssey Institute.

The next day, April 2, the Falcons hosted Payson, Gilbert Classical, Phoenix Country Day and Rancho Solano Prep at Desert Canyon.

Head coach Jody Wilson said he expected his younger golfers to do well this past week but even he was surprise by their stellar performance.

“The team has come further then I thought they would,” Wilson said. “I think that they are just starting to realize what they can do together as a team.”

Wilson said he believes that this season’s tighter practices have contributed a lot to the team’s success but he also has to give credit to his golfers’ attitudes toward the game.

“When we were packing up to leave Payson on Wednesday, Alex (Schafer) turned to me and said ‘I left five putts out there,’” Wilson said. “I just said, ‘You’ll get them next time.’ And he will. He has the pedigree for it but also, if you’re missing five putts and still shot two under, that’s not bad.”

The Falcons are currently leading their division but Wilson said he is looking forward to some stiffer competition from schools like Scottsdale Prep and Phoenix Country Day.
