It was a huge week for the girls’ soccer team, with the Lady Falcons going 2-1 and moving into the number one spot for the section.

They won’t have to wait too long to defend that ranking, as tonight marks the final match-up of the regular season.

The Falcons will celebrate seniors’ night this evening, Jan. 27, with a 6 p.m. match against Tempe High School.

As head coach Alison Mabery puts it, the Falcons are playing for the section title this evening and, if successful, this will be the team’s third straight year claiming that honor before moving into the state tournament.

Northwest

The Falcons were on the road Monday evening, Jan. 18, to take on the team from Northwest Christian.

Down 1-0 at the half, coach Mabery said the Falcons suffered a rare defeat, with Northwest Christian earning another goal by the end of the second half to go up 2-0 during the holiday match-up.

Scottsdale

The Falcons bounced back quickly from their loss to Northwest however, going on to claim a win of their own over the previously undefeated Scottsdale Prep on Wednesday evening, Jan. 20.

Going down 1-0 early, Mabery said the local ladies struck back with Erika Yost going one-on-one with the Scottsdale keeper to tie the game following assists from Leah Carillo and Selina Reisig.

“Selina Reisig would take matters into her own hands and score the game-winning goal, assisted by Erika Yost before the second half was over,” Mabery said.

“The Falcons held onto the lead for the second half, winning 2-1 and rising to number one in their section.”

Shadow Mountain

Two days later and the Falcons were on the pitch once again, this time facing Shadow Mountain on the road on Jan. 22.

“Defensive star Meagan Coveney started the Falcons off in the first half, scoring two goals,” Mabery said.

“In the second half, Selina Reisig and Leah Carillo each added another goal to defeat Shadow Mountain 4-0.”
