Girls soccer claims region title

The girls soccer team has won the region title yet again, wrapping up the regular season with another impressive pair of wins over teams from Scottsdale Christian Academy and Valley Christian.

With another region title under their belt, the Falcons prepare to take on Page in the opening round of the state playoffs this Friday, Feb. 3, beginning at 5 p.m. This match will be hosted out of Red Mountain Park. If victorious, the girls will play again this Saturday, Feb. 4, with a 1 p.m. match at the same location.

“We have played pretty sound in our regional play this year in what I believe is the toughest region in our division, with teams ranked number one, two and four,” said head coach Alison Mabery. “We also have a tough bracket to get through in tournament play. Any team can be the underdog during tournament time.

“We know the feeling, ranked number seven last year and winning state. This will be a tough mental challenge for us to stay focused, play our game and stick to the game plan.”

Scottsdale

Heading into their final week of the regular season, the Falcons were gearing up to take on a team with no losses and only a single tie in 3A division play. As Mabery knew going into the match, this would be the real battle for the region title.

“We scored first and never looked back,” Mabery added. “Erika Yost would end the night with a hat trick, Rori Smith would score a lone goal and an assist, while Madison George earned an assist. Selina Reisig finished the night scoring from about 40 yards back, right through the keeper’s hands.”

It wasn’t a completely lopsided event, however, as Scottsdale Christian managed to light up the board twice against the Falcons’ five goals.

Falcon keeper Charlotte Tornee recorded nine saves en route to this 5-2 victory for the local ladies.

Valley Christian

After muscling past Valley Christian three nights prior, the Falcons had little trouble clenching their title with a 6-0 victory over Valley Christian on Jan. 26.

Only playing half of the match, Yost lit up the field, scoring five goals in the first half with two assists from Rori Smith and one from Ali McAuliff.

“Meagan Coveney sent in a PK shot to end the first half at 6-0,” Mabery said. “Charlotte Tornee had six saves on the night while sophomore keeper Jenna Rodriguez made two saves, one off a dead ball just outside the box and giving the Falcons the shutout.”

With this big win, the Falcons remained undefeated in region play, earned their title and moved to the number one seed for 3A state competition.
