Gay: Skillicorn’s actions are an embarrassment to this town

To paraphrase the Gipper in his epic comeback to Jimmy Carter 44 years ago, “There he goes again!”

Councilperson Skillicorn has (shazam, again!) proven to be an embarrassment through his recent actions. Actions we’ve all seen before during his tenure on council. By filing suit against fellow councilpersons, the mayor, staff and outside counsel, he has stooped so low he can no longer be considered a true representative of our community. His motives are unclear as an elected official.

He has created a divide, whether political or not, between himself and professional staff, elected leaders and many other related individuals and groups. His demeanor has been curt, often accusatory, and sometimes condescending with those very people who he must work with daily. When the council took the extraordinary step to sanction his actions in response to multiple ethics complaints as investigated and reviewed by outside counsel, he verbally lashed out with unfounded accusations against many, and now, by filing a lawsuit.

That will cause additional communication issues between him and town government officials, staff and elected leaders, as everyone will be counseled by legal staff to not address anything remotely related to that lawsuit.

His actions are truly unprecedented in this community, and represents an embarrassment to everyone. His effectiveness as a representative of our residents is affected as a result, and only brought on by his own actions. Residents should consider legal alternatives to his continued (lack of) service to this community.

By the way, the issue that prompted the comeback was Reagan’s stand on Medicare and Carter’s vision to help people with catastrophic medical bills. Some things never change, just like Skillicorn’s disruptive hijinks.
