Game of politics

I’m feeling pretty disgusted. I attended the Town Council meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 3. For those of you familiar with the HBO series “Game of Thrones,” it looked like Cersei Lannister, seated on the Iron Throne, supported by three “sellswords,” was beheading innocent, honorable, and well-meaning Ned Stark.

For those who haven’t yet delved into the HBO series: Mayor Kavanagh, aided by Dennis Brown, Art Tolis, and Cecil Yates, fired our decade-long town attorney, Andrew McGuire. I have no idea exactly WHY the firing occurred. However, the process used shamed me and every member of the town our council represents.

How can one fire an employee without giving him a performance review? How can one fire an employee without warning, in front of a town meeting and TV cameras? And finally, how much will it cost the town to replace this man, with all of his Fountain Hills institutional knowledge?

The town is currently in the middle of a permitting lawsuit with the Park Place builder, and, according to Councilman Magazine’s testimony, is in the midst of negotiating a number of other legal issues. What will it cost to get a new attorney - if someone is desperate enough to work for such a town as ours - up to speed?

Councilmen Magazine, Leger, and DePorter voted against the firing - Thank-you to them. Irony of ironies - even as McGuire was spending his last few minutes as town attorney, he continued to give our Council legal advice. That’s what I call CLASS.
