A Fountain Hills High School student received minor burns to her hand in a freak accident at the school Friday morning, Jan. 10.
Fountain Hills Fire Chief Randy Roberts said a cell phone battery exploded, injuring the student and causing four others to complain of problems from smoke inhalation.
Firefighters determined that a student's smart phone had overheated and burst open releasing smoke into a classroom. Five patients were treated. Four were students and one was a teacher.
Roberts said the accident occurred in a classroom, but firefighters were called to the nurse’s office for the reported burn injury.
Parents of the students were notified and all declined transport to the hospital for further treatment. All five returned to class after treatment, Roberts said.
