Sandy Davis is a long-time member of the Golden Eagle Education Foundation and Mentor Program Coordinator. Davis not only served on the foundation’s board but was also a founding member of the mentorship program. Davis moved to Fountain Hills in 1993, and her neighbor across the street was one of the founding members that had just created Golden Eagle at the time. Golden Eagle was just starting out with scholarships, and Davis had been running a family foundation scholarship for a couple years prior. She ended up joining the Golden Eagle Education Foundation and was involved with scholarships at that time. She assisted in helping set up a protocol of how winners are chosen based on the information provided.
“I took over doing scholarships for Golden Eagle in ‘95,” Davis said. “And in ‘96, MSCO Properties started this mentor program. I was a retired school teacher. I retired early in my career, and I decided I’d like to get involved as a mentor program. “I knew Shelly Johnson, who was going to be running it (the mentor program) for MCO Properties. I contacted her and then I sorted it out just for MCO Properties people, and then in ‘97, they decided they were going to open it up to the community.”
Davis started working with Johnson on how they would do training for the community. The pair started training mentors, and Davis got on the board with Johnson. In 2000, MCO Properties decided they were no longer going to do the program, but Davis and her group decided to continue the program. Davis and the group took it over, but they needed to figure out how they were going to get funding and other important resources.
