Although written about more than any other U.S. President, Lincoln is still a mystery in many ways, says Roberts, who researched President Lincoln for her U.S. Military War College thesis and found many interesting, rarely discussed facts.
Roberts will cover surprising facts about Lincoln’s courtship of Mary Todd, his difficult relationship with his father, the tragic deaths of three of his sons, the medical conditions modern doctors postulate he may have had, how he really sounded when he spoke and more.
Roberts grew up in Pittsfield, a small town in Illinois where a young Lincoln “rode the circuit” as a lawyer, practicing law there for many years.
He spent nights there in a local hotel, drank cider with locals and spoke on the courthouse lawn when he was debating Stephen Douglas for a U.S. Senate seat.
