Fountain Hills’ grotesque departure from civil discourse

OPINION — I am writing as a concerned resident of Fountain Hills to express my disappointment regarding the current state of our local political climate.

Recently, I encountered a campaign sign (paid for by "Reclaim Our Town") that used deeply offensive language and wordplay to attack a mayoral candidate. The sign's use of gender-based puns and symbols is not just in poor taste, it is a grotesque departure from the civil discourse our community deserves.

When I reached out to Mayor Friedel regarding this signage, he was quick to clarify that he did not authorize this messaging and, in turn, shared accounts of hostility he personally faced, including threats at his home. While I appreciate his response and am disheartened to learn about his experiences with politically-motivated harassment, responding to divisiveness with what-aboutism, pointing to the opposition's faults rather than unequivocally denouncing the messaging used in his name, only ensures the cycle of hostility continues.
