The magical run Fountain Hills girls basketball put together, though surpassing season expectaions, fell short in the 2A state championship game to St. Johns 41-36 at Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Saturday, Feb. 27.
Still, the Falcons 25-4 season ended with a state runners-up banner, trophy and their first state appreance since 2014. And it was all done under first-year coach Tom Ferington.
In the third meeting between the two programs this season, with the Redskins taking both prior matchups, a 16-2 run late in the third quarter by St. Johns proved too big of a hole for Fountain Hills to climb out of.
