Fountain Hills’ Enrique Melendez recounts trip to El Salvador

Native of the Latin American country

Enrique Melendez was born in El Salvador but came to the United States about six decades ago. He has lived in Fountain Hills for more than 30 years and served on the town council at one time.

Melendez is a naturalized U.S. citizen and has dual citizenship with his native El Salvador.

In early April, Melendez made a trip home for a family visit. He said his younger brothers encouraged him to come home while he still had the opportunity. At 88 Melendez is hearing the sounds of windows of opportunity closing behind him so he made the trip. He was away from the city visiting family members and the family mausoleum and said he was not even aware of controversy brewing between the United States and El Salvado.
