Fountain Hills Democratic Club held October meeting

Club welcomes guest speakers and ‘Uncle Sam’

The Fountain Hills Democratic Club held its monthly meeting Thursday, Oct. 9, at the Community Center, featuring three guest speakers and a surprise visit from “Uncle Sam,” who rallied attendees to participate in the Thanksgiving Day Parade.

The evening’s keynote speaker was Dr. Amish Shah, an emergency physician at the Mayo Clinic and a 2026 Democratic Primary candidate for Arizona’s 1st Congressional District.

A former Arizona State Representative who has won all six of his legislative races, Dr. Shah shared insights from his medical and legislative experience and emphasized his commitment to making healthcare more affordable, protecting Medicare and Medicaid and reducing everyday costs for working-class Arizona families, according to club spokesperson Dave Long.

Drawing from his experience treating patients who often can’t afford care, Shah emphasized the need for universal access to affordable healthcare. He also highlighted his door-to-door outreach, having personally knocked on over 23,000 doors, and pledged to continue listening to voters as he prepares for the 2026 race.

Next, Francesca Martin, deputy director of the Keep Arizona Blue Student Coalition, energized the room with her story of youth-led activism.

A Political Science student at ASU, Martin co-founded the statewide PAC to increase Gen Z voter turnout and develop young political leaders, Long said. Her message focused on civic engagement, grassroots mobilization and the importance of including young voices in shaping Arizona’s political future.

Jacob George, a rising leader and founder of Unity Rising USA, shared his personal journey from housing insecurity to elected office. Now a Balsz Elementary School Board member and ASU student, George described his PAC’s mission to organize young, working-class communities through voter registration, advocacy and bold messaging

Unity Rising has been effective in engaging high school and college students in civic action and voter registration events.

The next Fountain Hills Democratic Club meeting will take place Thursday, Nov. 13, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Fountain Hills Community Center. For more information, visit fhdemclub.org or find the group on Facebook at facebook.com/groups/FHDemClub.org.
