Fountain Hills council discusses asphalt condition goals

Will use Pavement Condition Index

“Fix it now,” and “streets first,” have become the mantras behind efforts to maintain pavement in Fountain Hills in an acceptable condition.

To help achieve those goals, the Town Council has asked staff to use a Pavement Condition Index (PCI) as the marker for standard street conditions.

While the council did not call out a specific number as a goal, it was determined during a study last year that the average PCI for streets in Fountain Hills was just under 70, which is at the high end of “good” condition. However, it was pointed out by Public Works Director Justin Weldy many of the arterial streets in Fountain Hills have undergone major reconstruction within the past 10 years and are considered in “excellent condition, which has the effect of pulling the overall average up.”
