In last week’s Times, one letter to the editor repeated the “blame Bush” mantra that has been used again and again. This tirade against President Bush proceeded to stretch the truth on several points, including the frequent allegation that the existence of “weapons of mass destruction” was a fabrication, despite the fact that many of George W. Bush’s political opponents, and the intelligence agencies of many foreign countries, agreed that Iraq did indeed possess such weapons.
According to that letter, President Bush “nearly ruined our country.” Really?
Mr. Broge then attempted to convince us that, under President Obama, “the country is once again flourishing.”

Let’s consider our country during six-plus years of the Obama administration. The percentage of working-age Americans who are actually working is the lowest in many decades. The number of people on SNAP (food stamp program) is at an all-time high. The national debt now exceeds $18 trillion and, under President Obama, the debt has grown almost as much as under all prior Presidents.
The scandals: the “Fast and Furious” gun-running scandal; the IRS targeting of conservatives scandal; the Benghazi “what difference at this point does it make” scandal; the ISIS is only a “JV squad” scandal; the unconstitutional executive amnesty for illegals scandal; the release of five Taliban terrorists for accused deserter Bowe Bergdahl scandal; the snubbing of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu; the effort to negotiate with and trust Iran, the leading state sponsor of terrorism -- just to name a few.
By the way, that “recalcitrant Congress” that Mr. Broge blames was actually the previous Senate under Democrat Majority Leader Harry Reid, which failed to even take a vote on countless pieces of legislation.
Years ago, we were asked, “Are you better off now than you were?” Six years later, consider that question.
