Florence Eichenlaub

Florence Eichenlaub, age 99, of Fountain Hills, Manahawkin and Ship Bottom, N.J., passed away of natural causes on Sept. 4, 2018.

Florence was born on Oct. 1, 1918 in Bayonne N.J. to Cecilia and Michael Jankowski. Florence grew up in Bayonne, N.J. where she attended St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School in Bayonne and Bayonne Junior High. She was the fourth of six children.

Florence started her career at Triangle Oil in Bayonne, N.J., where she met her husband, Adolf Eichenlaub. They were married on Nov. 14, 1951.

After selling their business in Bayonne, N.J., Florence and Adolf attempted to retire in the early 1950’s on Long Beach Island in New Jersey. Retirement didn’t last long for this dynamic duo who again started several businesses in the area. Their final venture was an Esso station located just before leaving Long Beach Island on Route 72. This gas station was not your typical gas station. It was well known and very unique for many reasons but, most of all, for the gift shop Florence ran in the gas station. The shop specialized in local handicraft and hand carved duck decoys from local artists. Some of New Jersey’s most famous decoy carvers where personal friends of Florence and Adolf.

After Adolf passed away Florence sold their home in Ship Bottom, N.J., and moved to Fawn Lakes in Manahawkin, N.J., where she lived until she moved to Arizona to be closer to family.

Affectionately known as Aunt Fliss, she is survived by her brother-in-law, Ted Mackiewicz; her nephews, Robert Beym, Jan Jankowski, Ed Mackiewicz, John Mackiewicz, James Mackiewicz, Glenn Mackiewicz, Jeff Mackiewicz; her nieces, Janet Beym-Waltz, Debora Jankowski-Lange, Susan Mackiewicz-Lanzara and her close friends Pam and Tom Tees and their family.

Florence will be missed by many who loved her for her strong dedication to family and friends, her profound generosity and her unique sense of humor. She is now reunited with her siblings, Helen, Anna, Janet, Walter, Cecilia and loving husband, Adolf who have gone before her.

A Funeral Mass will be held for Florence on Oct. 1, 2018 at 10 a.m. at the St. Mary’s Parish located at 747 West Bay Avenue in Barnegat, N.J. Interment will occur following the Funeral Mass at Greenwood Cemetery in Tuckerton, N.J., where she will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband, Adolf.
