Fiscal common sense drove Fountain Hills solar decision

OPINION — Peggy Roberts’ recent opinion piece criticized the town council's decision regarding the proposed solar carport project at the Community Center, framing the vote as an ideological rejection of clean energy. That narrative ignores the facts and financial presentations delivered directly to the council and the public.

Local government’s primary duty is responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars. The detailed presentations made during town council meetings made one thing unmistakably clear: the solar carport proposal was simply not cost-efficient for the Town of Fountain Hills.

While shaded parking and renewable energy sound appealing on paper, the underlying financial reality did not add up. High installation costs, long and uncertain payback periods, structural considerations and future maintenance liabilities meant the project would have imposed a significant financial burden on our town without yielding a viable return on investment. Calling the council's vote "short-sighted" ignores basic arithmetic in favor of political rhetoric.
