When firefighter Evan MacKenzie climbs on his bike to prepare for Bike MS Arizona every year, it’s not just for the challenge of the ride, it’s for his wife, Alicia.
Alicia MacKenzie was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in the summer of 2021 after months of unexplained symptoms, from tingling in her fingers misdiagnosed as carpal tunnel to the painful squeezing sensation around her torso known as the “MS Hug.” The diagnosis changed everything for their family, including their 20-month-old daughter, Everly.
At the fire station, Evan says he used to take as much overtime as he could. Now, his focus is on his family.
