Three Mesa residents died when the vehicle in which they were passengers collided head-on with a wrong-way driver on SR 87 (Beeline Highway) about a mile south of Shea Boulevard early Sunday morning, May 26.
Witnesses in a third vehicle reported to Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) officers that they had to veer onto the shoulder to avoid the wrong-way driver traveling in a Chevy Avalanche. They looked back and noticed that headlights from another vehicle, a Ford F-150, had disappeared after the Avalanche had passed.
According to DPS Spokesman Bart Graves, the male driver of the Avalanche sustained serious injury in the collision and remains hospitalized as of Tuesday. Graves said driver impairment is suspected as a factor in the crash.
