As you read in Mike’s column last week, the only football coach in Fountain Hills High School’s history, Jim Fairfield, is retiring.
While he never did get that coveted state championship in his 22 years as head coach, he did run a quality program and shaped the lives of many boys who wanted to play football.
Here’s a bit of Fountain Hills trivia for you: Which team did Fountain Hills play in their first official game and who scored the first touchdown?

As you read in Mike’s column last week, the only football coach in Fountain Hills High School’s history, Jim Fairfield, is retiring.
While he never did get that coveted state championship in his 22 years as head coach, he did run a quality program and shaped the lives of many boys who wanted to play football.
Here’s a bit of Fountain Hills trivia for you: Which team did Fountain Hills play in their first official game and who scored the first touchdown?
The answer is Brimhall Junior High in Mesa and wide receiver Jason Devoning scored the first touchdown. Fountain Hills won the game, 35-3.
Good luck, Jim in your future endeavors.

If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, bring the family along to the River of Time Museum’s Chuck Wagon Meal fund-raiser being served on the museum’s patio on Saturday.
The event will begin at 3:30 and conclude at 6 p.m. Chili and cornbread will be served. Cost is $10 per person. Alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase.
The event is being held to coincide with the grand opening of the new Ranching exhibit.
Exhibit designer Alan Pape and the Arizona Kid, Carlos Hadaway, will be available to answer questions about the days when ranching was the way of life on the land that became Fountain Hills.
The ranch house was located in what is now the Fountain Hills high School parking lot. The Historical Society installed a bronze plaque to designate the location in the late 1990s.
We’ll also have some fun on Saturday with the naming of the horse figure that is a part of the new display.
People can place their entry in the drawing box, and the winning entry will be drawn at 5 p.m.
Reservations are required. Call 816-4186 or email president@riverof timemuseum.org.

Well another Fountain Festival is behind us.
The weather cooled off in time for the annual art show and sale. I had a light jacket on Sunday afternoon and it felt good.
When I let our beagle out Monday morning, I noticed it was 43 degrees. It’s time to start wearing a sweat shirt when I go out to retrieve the morning paper.

Can you believe how well the Arizona Cardinals are doing?
They are 9-1 on the season, and they are three games ahead of rivals Seattle and San Francisco in the western division. Their record is better than any other team in the entire National Football League.
And then there’s ASU. I was more than a little nervous about them going into Eugene, Oregon, to battle the Oregon State Beavers. They had lost their previous three games there, it was only 32 degrees at kickoff and the Sun Devils had a number six ranking going into the game. All of that added up to a potentially big upset, which is exactly what happened.
