Falcons drop match to Campo Verde

The Fountain Hills High School boys volleyball team psyched themselves into another loss in last week’s match, according to head coach Halle Harker.

On March 28 the Falcons played an away match against Campo Verde and were swept in three sets.

Fountain Hills volleyball will be playing three back to back road matches this week.

The first was yesterday, April 2, against American Leadership Academy Queen Creek.

The next match is set for today, April 3, against Marcos de Niza starting at 5:30 p.m.

The final match on Thursday, April 4, will be against Seton Catholic starting at 5:30 p.m.

Harker said she believes that the same thing that happened in the Falcons’ match against Mesquite happened against Campo Verde.

“We were warming up, the guys saw Campo run some drills and immediately got timid,” Harker said. “To beat a team as good as (Campo), you need to be willing to go out there and take risks, and we had a really hard time with that.”

Harker said she believes that the Falcons can use this defeat as a “humbling lesson.”

“I told the guys after the game that they have to go into every game expecting that the other team is great,” Harker said. “You have to assume that and then go out there to compete and do your best. It is a lesson that translates well over to life, too, because sometimes in life you are competing with people who seem better than you and the one thing you control in that situation is how you react.”

Harker isn’t too worried about the Falcons’ week of back to back games.

“The guys have known this has been coming up for a few weeks now so I think they have mentally prepared themselves,” Harker said. “Also, running two-hour practices helps.”
