One of the drivers involved in a collision between two dump trucks at Palisades and Golden Eagle boulevards on Wednesday, March 4, received two citations related to the accident.
There was one criminal citation related to the brakes on the truck being out of adjustment. There were no other safety violations related to the vehicle. The driver also received a traffic citation for failure to control his vehicle to avoid a collision.
The two dump trucks were hauling dirt from the construction site in FireRock Country Club when they collided at the stop sign on Palisades at Golden Eagle on Wednesday afternoon. They were both loaded at the time of the accident.
The driver of the rear truck told Maricopa County Sheriff’s deputies that his brakes failed coming down the hill on Palisades. The trucks collided causing extensive damage to the right front and passenger side of the cab.
The front vehicle sustained damage to the rear left tires on the trailer. It was expected that vehicle could be driven away after the tires and wheels were replaced.
Sheriff’s deputies said a third vehicle was involved. An SUV stopped at the stop sign at the time of the collision sustained damage from debris from the accident. No one was injured in the accident.
MCSO called Scottsdale Police to have a certified truck inspector brought to the scene. That inspector is the one who wrote the criminal violation related to the brakes.
Prior to the accident Town Hall had received several calls and comments from people complaining about the speed of the vehicles and potential pavement damage related to the dirt haul.
Town Manager Grady Miller told The Times that staff took a number of steps designed to maximize safety and minimize impacts to residents prior to the haul work beginning.
“The town requires the dump trucks to adhere to a specified truck traffic route,” Miller said. “MCSO is enforcing this route and making stops when it is apparent that there is a violation of speeding, material falling off the trucks and reckless driving.”
Also, Miller said the truck drivers/operators are required to inspect their vehicles and trailers at the beginning of each work day. This inspection includes the safety features of the vehicle including brakes, brake lights, turn signals, tires and other equipment.
“Town staff also makes sure that the trucking companies are working within the specified work hours per Town Code and that they run street sweepers as needed to clean the dirt and material that fall off of the trucks.”
Miller said the hauling out of FireRock Country Club should be done by the end of April. A second haul from the Adero Canyon construction site, which is using the same truck routing, began just about a week ago and is expected to continue into early June.
MCSO Capt. Dave Letourneau will be making a presentation to the Town Council at its meeting this week on Thursday, March 17, related to the truck traffic and law enforcement measures to assure safety. The council meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in council chambers at Town Hall, and is open to the public.
