I see Arpaio from a slightly different view than last week’s opinion letter. Joe Arpaio has been elected to office six times by the residents of Maricopa County.
He has been elected over and over again because he is one, out of a very small handful of politicians, who actually attempts to do what he is paid to do. In his case he is elected to enforce the laws of our county, state and nation.
Arpaio is not on trial for enforcing the law. He is on trial because an unelected political hack has told him not to enforce the law.

A basic theory of law enforcement is the establishment of a profile for the violators of the law. It makes little sense to hunt down the Eskimos when 90 percent of the illegal immigrants are Hispanic. Yet Arpaio has been told that the apprehension of anyone other than straight, Anglo-Saxon Protestants will be considered racial profiling.
When Arpaio learned that the judge’s wife was expressing bias by stating publicly that she intended to help put the sheriff out of office, Arpaio investigated the allegations -- to do less would have been foolish. If there is any truth to the story, the judge should recuse himself. That is not rocket science.
This week we have seen what happens in Baltimore when a mayor tells the police to “stand down and give the protesters their space.” As in Ferguson, law enforcement has been thrown under the bus and the citizens and taxpayers have paid the price. Law enforcement is not run on a “play nice in the sandbox” mentality.
