Do the math

Once again we have had an exceptional art show, due in part to the exceptional weather that we enjoyed over the Great Fair weekend.

Everyone enjoyed the results of the show until the Chamber dropped the A-Bomb — attendance figures. Some 284,000 visitors in three days – that is a little more than 82,000 per day. Just imagine this, our little Chamber art show exceeded the paid attendance of the Super Bowl by 20,000 people and did it three days in a row. What is the purpose of this bloviating?

A total of 82,000 people would require the better part of 40,000 cars. That is 40,000 coming in and 40,000 going out, and they were able to accomplish this on three roads, two of which were reduced to one lane each way, not taking into consideration stop signs and traffic lights.

This morning, traffic is backed up all the way to SR87 because of the one lane construction on Saguaro Boulevard and that is just the normal, everyday, traffic.

Do the math -- the average car is about 17 feet long; 40,000 cars, parked bumper to bumper, would be a line 680,000 feet long -- 137 miles of cars waiting to get in and 137 miles of cars waiting to get out. Okay, put four people in every car for the true believers -- traffic would still be backed up to Buckeye.

It is time for the chamber to move the attendance figures over a decimal point. The bigger question that comes from this -- can we believe anything they say?

The art shows are two of the best in the Valley. Why not just take credit for the bread and butter and leave out the baloney?
