Coincidently, just before reading the letter from our former discredited Mayor Jon Beydler in the Jan. 11 Times I was looking at a button that celebrated the 20th anniversary of our incorporation as a town.

I consequentially returned to the Fountain Hills Times “Celebrating 20 Years Special Section” that walked us through some history that was published in December 2009. Here is part of the piece on our former Mayors:

“In 2002 Morgan was challenged by a boisterous and controversial businessman, Jon Beydler. Beydler’s outspoken demeanor and controversial ideas marked him for a short term as mayor. Beydler proposed the idea of digging canals in downtown to create a ‘Venice of the West.’ He was also frequently in confrontations with Fountain Hills resident and Maricopa County’s own controversial Sheriff, Joe Arpaio. Beydler was the target of a recall effort a year after he was elected and in 2003 was voted out of office. Defeating Beydler in the recall election was Wally Nichols, a retired business executive with a soft spoken, easy going manner – the antithesis of Beydler.”

Currently we have wonderful, cool January weather, but we all know what temperatures can be like in August. The following will provide background of the obvious concern by former Sheriff Arpaio’s deputy.

“On Aug. 12, Beydler left his 4-year-old daughter, Summer, in his parked car with the windows rolled up while he talked nearby on a cellphone. A passer-by saw only the girl in the hot car with the windows rolled up and eventually reported it to Child Protective Services…”

So, this same individual, Jon Beydler, promises more letters to the editor from his current home in Chandler over the next several months; heaven forbid! I would like to put that short but bizarre year under Mayor Beydler behind us and move on.
