The Town Council deferred action on a proposal to rename the Avenue of the Fountains Plaza “Morgan Park” to honor former Mayor Sharon Morgan.
Morgan has been involved in civic activities since her arrival in 1989, when she helped create the first Welcome Wagon Club and served as its president.
She also served two terms as the town’s first woman mayor from 1998 through 2002. She has continued to work for the Fountain Hills Chamber of Commerce for 29 years, organizing the two annual art fairs and the Thanksgiving Day Parade. Her management of these events has helped attract millions of visitors to the community.

Morgan also has served on numerous boards and was president of the Sister Cities, helping to initiate the town’s four international Sister Cities.
As mayor, she was involved in acquisition of preserve land in the McDowell Mountains and spearheaded the planning and construction of the Fountain Hills Library/Museum and the Community Center.
The naming decision was delayed with Vice Mayor Dennis Brown’s suggestion that there are few opportunities in town to recognize outstanding citizens and perhaps the Avenue Plaza should be segmented to allow for recognition of additional outstanding citizens in the future.
He suggested that the portion of the plaza between Saguaro Boulevard and the turnaround lane just west of that intersection be designated to recognize Morgan. However, it was decided to allow for further discussion on the proposal to segment the plaza before taking final action.
It is uncertain when the proposal will be back before the council.
