The now famous Jack Nicholson quote from the movie, “A Few Good Men,” was “You can’t handle the truth.” Apparently the Daybreak people think this is also true of the people of Fountain Hills, because they really didn’t give us a whole lot of truth in their advertisement in last week’s Times.
First, comparing Daybreak to a non-existent “alternative commercial plan (the hotel) being allowed to proceed” is untrue to the extent that there is no commercial plan under consideration. The property in question has been zoned for a hotel for over 20 years. Now, still no hotel and no plans for one either. Comparing your project to one that does not exist is foolhardy and bespeaks desperation.

Second, the numbers in the Daybreak advertisement seem very impressive: $43 million here, $20 million there, another $4 million over here. Oh yeah, and at the end of one of the longest, most convoluted sentences ever published, it says “this economic impact of Daybreak starts flowing over its first 10 years.” What? So then all of these numbers have to be divided by 10 at the very least.
For example, the alleged $4 million in local tax revenue is maybe $400,000 a year starting sometime in the 2022/2023 timeframe, at best. While that’s still a pretty good chunk of change, it would likely represent less than 1 percent of the town’s annual budget in that time period. So, it is not as big a deal as they would lead you to believe.
Finally, the ad closes with the developers favorably comparing Daybreak to both FireRock Country Club and Adero Canyon. Really? Give us a break, Daybreak.
