Culture

A subject currently not in public view nor on most people’s minds is our culture. But beware, it’s not asleep.

Culture is the cumulative long-term sum of distinctive learned behavior that carries particular meanings which become traditions that gets passed on from generation to generation. Generally culture works for the social betterment of all through knowledge, experiences, values, symbols, preferences, language and customs.

Take a picture of today’s culture. What do you see? I see government, media and education changing our culture for their own needs. Multiculturalism, diversity, religious oppression, loss of liberties, class warfare, etc.

Multiculturalism is one culture incorporating another, with neither culture surviving. Diversity is prejudicially segregating one group from another. A war’s being waged to replace our culture with a “ruling class.” To paraphrase a cultural cynic: Culture is anything we do that the monkeys don’t.

Is that how you feel?

Is the “ruling class” attempting to control all aspects of human experience? If yes, then man will be prevented from developing the common philosophical bonds that hold a culture together. Many philosophers see culture as one of the principle ways people overcome their barbarism. Have you noticed any added oppression, inhumanity, cruelty, rudeness or violence lately?

Some long-lived cultural traditions I see being threatened that will be hostile to the quality of our lives: Democracy, marriage, U.S. Constitution, father and mother parenting, privacy, moral leadership, speech, Christmas, right to be born, honesty and home cooking. What’s yours?

Our culture’s true identity is its rich history and the social development and interconnection with all its people. We once had a culture that was profound and noble and resided in everyone’s heart and soul.

Cicero called culture “a cultivation of the soul.” Time to clear some unwanted debris from my soul. How about you?
