The Fountain Hills Community Band (FHCB) has scheduled its last concert this season for Sunday, April 21, at 4 p.m.

The theme of the concert is “Decades,” a collection of pop music from the 1890s to the 1980s including music from the Big Band Era, a medley of songs by Elvis Presley, a classical version of Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin and more.

In addition to its final concert, the Fountain Hills Community Band is offering the chance to experience what it is like to conduct the orchestra.

Community Band Director Scott Burgener will pass the baton to a winner drawn from applications taken at the April 21 concert, and the winner will conduct a song at the band’s Christmas concert Dec. 15, 2024.

Offering playing and learning opportunities for musicians of all skill levels along with a yearly scholarship to a Fountain Hills High School student-musician, this is the second year the band has welcomed a guest conductor. Last year’s guest conductor was Fountain Hills resident Sandi Thomson who said it was an exhilarating, once-in-a-lifetime experience, according to FHCB Vice President Gene Mikolajczyk.

To apply to be the next guest conductor of the Fountain Hills Community Band, those interested should attend the band’s next concert Sunday, April 21, at 4 p.m. in the Fountain Hills Community Center and fill out the application form provided at the event.

If selected, the participant should attend one rehearsal in the fall and be prepared to inspire and lead the band at its winter concert.

The April 21 concert is held in the Fountain Hills Community Center ballroom. Admission is free and donations are welcomed.
