Thanks to The Times for setting the Fountain Hills mayoral debate in print. I joke about political rhetoric saying, “It goes in one head and out the other.”

Reading the community’s letters usually is an eye-opener. Yet, it is better to experience the best and the worst of development by living in Fountain Hills full-time. Developers are eager to build their projects, obtaining special permits to circumnavigate building codes to conform to their architectural plans. Threats of legal action must be eliminated in the process. Common sense must prevail.

What about conserving water and utilities? Did any developers offer to replace, repair or install new roads and sidewalks? Is there a successful sales force to market the apartments, condos, empty lots and commercial buildings begging to be occupied? What tax advantages are limited incentives?

There have been violations of noise levels from resorts and rentals in private neighborhoods where zoning has been changed to favor semi-commercial use. Building heights have been approved to 50 feet for special projects. Has this change intruded on the views of established businesses and residents?

Voters have plenty to think about for the coming election. Here’s one thought: How does Fountain Hills attract young families if there is no growth industry to employ them? Will the main industry for employment be assisted living facilities? We already have two in town and a third proposal still valid with required changes. Fountain Hills is a small town in search of a clear definition. What is your vision?
