The four individuals who were involved in the March 13 crash at the corner of Saguaro and Palisades Boulevard visited Fountain Hills to escape the winter weather in both Iowa and Alberta, Canada.

Robert (Bob) Bonta, 72; his wife, Karen, 71, and Patti Lou Doornbos, 60, who goes by Lou were killed.

Ron Doornbos, also 60, remains in a coma as of this writing with severe head and internal injuries. He is being treated in the intensive care unit of HonorHealth Scottsdale Hospital. He has already undergone three surgeries.

The two couples did not know each other.

Lou Doornbos was a triplet, along with sister Terri Dutka and Rhonda Francis. The three sisters, born and raised in Calgary, operated a company, Fairy Fastener, according to the CBS television station in Calgary.

The company made jewelry extensions to solve the issue of putting on a necklace or bracelet by oneself.

“We did everything together,” Francis said. They celebrated their 60th birthday in September.

“Lou had a huge network of friends through all the things she’s done with her cycle clubs, her running clubs, her book clubs,” she said in an interview.

Francis and Dutka said the loss of their sister is simply devastating.

“I don’t know what it’s like not to be a triplet. It’s like having two best friends.”

Francis said their main focus right now is supporting their grieving parents, their other two siblings and Ron.

The couple had been in Arizona only a few days visiting Ron’s brother, Derk, and his wife, Linda, who had rented a home here.

The Canadian couple had known each other since they were teenagers but it wasn’t until 2013 when they married.

Ron has worked as a project coordinator with Telus for several years while Lou recently retired from a career in human resources at oil and gas companies, said her sisters. Ron also had served as race director for the Harvest Half Marathon for nearly 20 years.

Robert and Karen Bonta

Bob and Karen Bonta were long respected figures in education and health care in Wever, Iowa.

The Hawk Eye newspaper in Burlington, Iowa, reported that Bob served as the president of the board of directors at Fort Madison Community Hospital from 2014 to 2017. He worked 26 years and retired as chief administrator in 2002 from Great River Area Education Agency (AEA).

Karen Bonta retired as a guidance counselor from Fort Madison School District.

Jennifer Woodley, public relations coordinator at Great Prairie AEA, told the paper that Robert Bonta’s “dedication to the students and families of southeast Iowa will be remembered.’’

The two married in 1967. They enjoyed traveling the globe, visiting Africa, China, South America, Antarctica, Australia, Egypt, Alaska, Europe, Canada, the Caribbean and Mexico, and had spent the last few winters in Fountain Hills, according to online obituaries posted by King-Lynk Funeral Home in Fort Madison.

They have a son, two daughters and 10 grandchildren.
