I recently wrote a letter to the editor regarding the proliferation of birds around the lake.
I began my letter stating how much we like Fountain Hills and all that it offers. I guess since I didn’t mention every little thing that is great about Fountain Hills I wasn’t being positive.
It goes without saying that I and most people I know truly appreciate the continuing improvements we see in Fountain Hills.

I assume the letter written the following week by Ms. Lisa Wager was motivated by my comments on the bird situation. It seems that because we don’t live here full time we aren’t entitled to an opinion? Those of us who are “snowbirds” have invested in the community, pay taxes, support local merchants and activities.
That should permit us to have a say in the issues that affect “our” community.
I never once mentioned killing the birds and I haven’t heard that position put forth by anyone that I know. I hear complaints about the bird population from fulltime residents as well as snowbirds. This is not a snowbird issue and to try and make it one is simply a diversionary tactic.
The lake is man-made, the setting is not natural, the food that misguided people feed the birds is not natural. There is little about the bird situation that could be considered “natural.”
I do not and never will condone killing the birds, but some measures to limit the population are imperative.
Here’s a suggestion: Feeding buckets of white bread to coots is not a natural thing. Adjust your attitude, embrace true nature and not an unnatural view of wildlife. There is nothing natural about the state of the birds around the lake.
