While the tragedy of a child drowning can happen at any time, the summer months are a particular concern due to increased activity around swimming pools.
According to the American Red Cross, drowning is a leading cause of death for children, and the Red Cross and public safety officials know that individuals can have a big role in changing that by following some basic rules.
The National Water Safety Coalition, which includes the American Red Cross, National Recreation and Park Association, Pool & Hot Tub Alliance and the World Waterpark Association designates May each year as National Water Safety Month. This coalition raises awareness about water safety and highlights the importance of public education for safe practices for children and adults in and around water.
