Baseball team hits state this weekend

It was a close competition, but the baseball squad dropped its game versus Chino Valley last week, 3-0, ending the regular season at number two in the section.

Both Fountain Hills and Chino Valley ended the season with a 9-1 record but, losing the head-to-head competition, the Falcons fell just behind their opponents for end-of-year standings.

This loss did not hamper the Falcons’ post-season plans, however, as the local boys did well enough this season to earn a bye through the first round of state competition.

The team is now set to seek some vengeance Friday, May 9, at 4 p.m. when they take on Chino Valley yet again. That game will be hosted out of the Surprise sports complex.

If victorious, the Falcons will return to Surprise Saturday to play the winner of the Scottsdale Christian/Bisbee game. That game will begin at 11 a.m.

Chino Valley

The Falcons only had one game last week, the regular season ending match-up against Chino Valley April 30.

The Falcons haven’t had many off days this season but, unfortunately, this last competition in front of the hometown crowd was one of them.

“We struggled in all facets of the game,” said head coach Mike Briguglio.

“We only had four hits this outing. Two were by Devin Foyle and the others were by Andy Szwiec and Ethan Fett.”

Another anomaly for the Falcons, the local boys committed four errors this outing.

“Our pitchers struck out 12, but some untimely wild pitches led to some runs,” Briguglio said.

“They only had three hits, but the timeliness of those hits and our errors made the difference. It was the wrong time to play a poor game.”

Losing 3-0, this game secured the Falcons’ position as the number two team in the section behind Chino Valley. Briguglio said his team is looking forward to getting another crack at Chino team this weekend.

“We’re working on correcting the things that caused our loss,” Briguglio said.

“It wasn’t the other team. It was all internal. But we’ve got a week to focus on the fundamentals and get ready to play.

“I think the kids are highly motivated.”
