Bad tax I

They’re back! The tax and spend people.

Last week there was a letter promoting a town property tax. This tax has been voted down three times. Unless the laws have changed, there is no way after the voters approve it the town council has to come back to the voters. The council can increase the tax two percent every year forever.

Last year Scottsdale decided not to raise the tax. Several of their council members finally realized that a large majority of their citizens are on a fixed income.

When a town creates a property tax that includes all of the businesses, that means they will pass on that cost to all of their customers. That includes rental units. That is a double tax on all of us.

Mr. Thompson wrote the town council could lower the sales tax if they had a property tax. Really, when has anyone seen that? The only sales tax that has been reduced was a tax passed with a designated purpose like a ball park or highway.

We have just gone through the worst recession since the great depression. The town laid off over 40 percent of the personnel. What changed? Nothing! What were they doing?

We continued to maintain our police, paramedics and fire department, three great schools, parks and recreation programs covering about everything. We redid and beautified the Avenue of the Fountains and the Fountain Park; even added lights throughout the park.

You cannot use the paving excuse anymore. We do what’s needed with bonds. With all the new construction that has started there will be an increase in our population which will add to our State revenue sharing and sales tax.

Mr. Thompson, what exactly are you missing and don’t like about our beautiful town?
