One reason Dan Margolis received the Chamber of Commerce’s Entrepreneur of the Year award was his recruiting musical performers for veterans and charity events.
His latest venture is Armed Forces Day on Saturday, May 21, a time to honor current military and veterans. The celebration will begin at 11 a.m. and continue to 11 p.m. at the American Legion Post 58. 16837 E. Parkview Ave.
The Legion also will announce the winners of four college scholarships to graduating high school seniors.

Except for food and beverages, the event is free. Children are encouraged to attend with their parents. A kids’ tent will provide ice cream, popsicles and water.
Margolis, owner of Fountain Hills Barber Shop, is assisting Phil Yin, former Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) commander, and Legion commander Bob Putnam to coordinate the event.
A Chamber of Commerce ribbon-cutting for Cold Beers and Cheeseburgers will open the day’s activities at 11 a.m.
The closest Cold Beers and Cheeseburgers restaurant is on 116th St., Scottsdale. Square One Concepts owns the sports bar and has participated in arts festivals here for the last three years.
Kid bands will perform at 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Adult bands will take the stage from 3 to 6:30 p.m. and 7 to 11 p.m.
Cold Beers and Cheeseburgers owns Wasted Grain, a venue where young musicians can receive exposure. Many are enrolled in the School of Rock Performance Program.
The kids’ bands to perform Saturday will be Aimless Ambition and Innocent Elaine and Friends. A Fountain Hills teen, Mason Hilz, is lead singer and a guitarist in Aimless Ambition.
Margolis and Yin commented that the Legion wants more families with children to move into town and attend events.
In October, the Legion plans on instituting monthly youth days with various themes to spotlight the young bands.
Barbara Swanberg featuring Thomas Oliver will play from 3 to 4 p.m. Hippie Gold, featuring music from the 60s and 70s will perform from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
