Arizona Senate approves plan to double legislators' pay, give annual raises

House must approve before bill could head to November ballot

PHOENIX — A majority of state senators want to ask voters to double their pay.

The claim is Arizonans may get a better — or, at least, a broader — choice of people to represent them if they raise their salaries.

The 20-9 vote Wednesday to send the issue to the November ballot came on the proposal by Senate Majority Leader John Kavanagh, who has argued voters can be convinced that the time has come to revisit the current $24,000 salary. That was enacted in 1998.
