I was appalled at the number of letters in this week’s Times against the Town Council establishing an LGBT anti-discrimination policy for Fountain Hills.
Even more appalling was the strong stand against it by two pastors! What hypocrisy, when Jesus called upon us to be accepting of all people, not just the ones we feel comfortable with!
Most of the writers state that there are already federal laws dealing with discrimination. That may be true, but those laws can be circumvented by anyone with the will to work around them....just look at how busy the courts are trying settle disputes over laws that are not clearly written or just not liked!

What are we afraid of in making sure no segment of the population is denied the rights the rest of us have? This policy would simply guarantee that the law of the land is implemented and obeyed and has nothing to do with putting uni-sex bathrooms in every public building!
Perhaps it would be more honest for these folks to admit that they are afraid they’ll be forced to mingle with those whose lifestyle, religion, color and politics don’t agree with theirs.
As a species we haven’t evolved that far beyond the Stone Age in many ways and still respond instinctively to danger (real and imagined) the way early man did.
A bit of enlightenment and education may be in order, so that in knowing the reason behind our often knee-jerk reactions, we may train ourselves to look at things more rationally. As Bill Schweers points out in his letter, the luck of the draw determines so much of what we have and who we are.
