In view of the front-page article in last week’s edition regarding the Technology Learning Center, I would like to update the community on the issues, as I see them.

The Technology Learning Center, affectionately known as TLC, is a self-funded, all-volunteer organization that teaches computer skills to all of the residents and visitors of our community. We offer year-round workshops for a nominal fee (some are even free).

The current issue is that the Town of Fountain Hills needs more space and the Technology Learning Center should share their Community Center space. We understand the need.

TLC has enjoyed a special VIP status since 2001 when we were given a free room in the old Senior Center; and continuing with the Fountain Hills Community Center with a five-year rental agreement that expires in June 2015.

There are three main issues as I see it.

• Technical: Convert from desktop workshops to laptop mobile classwork environment. This will free up space within the classroom.

• Schedule: A fixed calendar (three consecutive days per week) is needed in order to provide advance workshop planning (i.e. student’s schedule, marketing, volunteers and printing).

• Cost: What will a new rental agreement entail – duration and cost?

TLC is currently in discussion with both the Town of Fountain Hills and the Community Services Advisory Commission. I know that we will be able to come to an agreement.

The town has expressed a desire for us to remain; the community views us not only as a resource but a necessity; TLC wants to continue offering services.
