A little of this and a little of that

Congratulations to members of the Fountain Hills High School Falcons baseball team.

As you may have read in last week’s edition, the Falcons won the school’s fourth state baseball title.

The team showed its tenacity in a come-from-behind 5-4 victory, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the seventh and last inning.

Don’t you just love it?

Well it had to happen! The first 100-degree day of the year in Fountain Hills was recorded on Monday, May 13.

But you have to admit, it hasn’t been all that bad.

Imagine if you lived in “tornado alley,” where they had dozens of funnels recorded in the past week in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas.

I called a close publisher friend, Jerry Tidwell, last Thursday when I awoke that morning to hear that sections of Granbury, Texas had been devastated by a category 4 tornado. Jerry publishes the Hood County News in Granbury.

I was relieved to hear that the tornado had gone through a different part of town. “All we had at the house was rain and baseball-sized hail,” Jerry said.

I replied, “Is that all?!”

He said he couldn’t talk long as he was in a meeting with his reporting staff and it was already a busy day with six confirmed deaths, a hundred people injured and whole subdivisions flattened in his county.

Congratulations to Barb and Fred Hansen, who celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary last Saturday with many friends and family members. This special couple has done so much for our community over the years as volunteers and fund-raisers for a number of organizations.

Here’s to many more, Barb and Fred.

And speaking of special volunteers, the memorial service for Barbara Wyman on Saturday afternoon at the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church was so well attended that the pews were filled and additional chairs had to be brought in to accommodate the overflow.

She served as the church’s choir director for years. One son, Bruce, was joined by his two sisters in the singing of a song as a tribute to their mom. He said that the family home was always filled with music when they were growing up. “Everyone was always singing,” he said. “I thought all families were like that.”

Barb was also our chief docent at the River of Time Museum. At our recent 10th anniversary celebration of the museum, she acted out the role of Martha Summerhayes, an army wife and author who wrote about life at Fort McDowell in the days of the cavalry.

She’ll truly be missed by a lot of people.
