A little of this and a little of that

I talked to Marti Dawkins last week after I wrote about her husband in my previous column.

She asked if I would make some corrections to what I said last week.

Dave was 84, not 82. I mentioned that he was a member of the “white Jeep sales team.” He was never a member of the regular sales team serving the company as an outside contract real estate broker. I guess I remember seeing Dave eating lunch with a couple of the salesmen and I made an incorrect assumption.

I committed the ultimate sin for a reporter. I flashed back to a piece of advice I received some 40 years ago from my mentor, Arthur Hewitt, telling me, “In this business, you never assume anything.”

Dave and Marti owned Dave Dawkins Realty, which they opened in Scottsdale before they moved to Fountain Hills in 1973. In 1978 they purchased the Village Bazaar, the community’s first shopping center, (opened in 1973). They bought it from Pratt Properties, then sold it back to the developer in 1983.

They sold all the buildings but granted a lease on the modular building to the Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber moved into its new building in 1998 and the museum operated out of that location for one year. The buildings were torn down to make way for the Plaza Fountainside.

Dave had extensive knowledge about early day Fountain Hills. His legacy lives on.

The annual Chamber of Commerce gala will be held this Friday evening and will take on a 1950s theme, complete with a guest Elvis. Don’t worry, it’s not me. You won’t have a 69-year-old Elvis with a whole lot of shakin’ going on entertaining you.

The evening’s activities begin with a cocktail hour at 6 p.m., followed by a comfort food dinner, entertainment and the annual awards presentations.

It should be a fun evening.

We drove up to Las Vegas last week so Diane could help daughter Toni and husband Jason move into a new home they have rented.

It is in the Rhodes Ranch community on the southwest side of the metro Las Vegas area.

It’s a beautiful gated community with a recreation center, multiple community pools and parks with playgrounds.

Our grandson, Camden. our miracle baby really didn’t quite know what was going on. He wanted to go home to the old house until “gramma” convinced him that this was now his home.

The night before we drove home, we all went out to dinner in celebration of the new home. We went to Benihana, where Jason’s brother, Brandon, works. Camden impressed the chef so much with his knowledge of the planets.

“You’ve got to get a video of that,” our chef said. “I don’t even know all of the planets’ names, let alone tell you what order they are in.”

That’s our Camden!
