A little of this and a little of that

We have established a second home in the Green Valley area of Henderson, Nev., south of Las Vegas.

I know, you never thought you would be reading about me leaving Fountain Hills. Well, Diane and I are not leaving town, we’re just establishing another residence for us.

We have been going to Las Vegas so much lately that we decided to get a condo there. We’ve been babysitting our grandson, Camden.

You may recall, he is the one who was born with the heart defect and had open heart surgery at four months old. His heart was completely repaired.

Now he’s full of energy and runs everywhere. He’s almost four years old now and will be playing T-ball before we know it.

On our last trip to Vegas, we took him to see Santa at the Town Square shops. I guess he’s growing up. He climbed right on Santa’s lap and immediately smiled for the camera and told him he wanted a BB-8 robot from the new Star Wars movies. Contrast that with the scene two years ago when he screamed his head off and wanted nothing to do with the guy in the white beard.

The following day we then headed over to our timeshare in Newport Beach. On Tuesday of that week we were visited by daughter Holly. She drove up from her home in Carlsbad, Calif. and we had lunch together. The next day we drove down to Carlsbad to see her newly remodeled home and her two daughters, Brooke and Addy. They are six and eight now and are involved in dance and gymnastics. Within six weeks, we have seen all eight of our grandchildren.

Here’s a funny thing: There is a restaurant across the street from our condo complex in Henderson called the Village Pub with the same logo as the restaurant that operated in the early days of Fountain Hills.

We ate dinner at the Nevada Village Pub on the night we moved into our condo there and the food was very good. We walked in half expecting to see the Ryans and Scribners tending bar and waiting on tables.

Those of you who have been asking where you can get a copy of the Fountain Hills history book “Rising Above the Rest,” will be glad to hear that Jerry Miles, Jean Linzer and I will be getting back to our keyboards after the first of the year to do an update of the book that will come out some time in 2018.

The first edition came out in 2010. Sales were brisk in the beginning. As sales slowed to almost nothing, we lowered the price to $10.

We eventually sold out of all copies. Then the demand picked up again. We came to the decision of reprinting the book when the two Leadership Academy classes asked for copies of the book to give to the graduates. We’ll announce when the books become available.

Congratulations to our three Grand Prize winners in our Holidays Cash in the Hills promotion.

They are Maureen Grottke, $500; Jack Morris, $300; and Rosemarie Dann, $200.

With the upcoming holidays, our office will be closed the next two Mondays.

It also means deadlines for advertising and editorial matter are changed for those weeks. All display ads are due by Wednesday at 3 p.m. and classified “reader ads” are due by Friday at noon. That is also the deadline for all letters to the editor. Story ideas, club news and other announcements are due by Thursday at 3 p.m.

Finally, on behalf of the staff, I want to wish everyone the happiest of holidays.
