The Fountain Hills High School girls basketball team has wrapped up its regular season and is looking ahead to the state tournament.
The Lady Falcons’ first game last week was against Arizona College Prep on Feb. 5. FHHS won the game 55-22.
The second game Fountain Hills played in was against American Leadership Academy Gilbert, where the Falcons struggled and lost the match 66-24.
The first playoff game for the Lady Falcons was yesterday, Feb. 11, against Valley Christian. Results were not available as of press time.
If the Lady Falcons won that game their next playoff match will be on Friday, Feb. 15, against Holbrook at 6:30 p.m.
AZ College Prep
Head coach Mandy Baca said she was happy with the number of Falcons who got playing time during the Feb. 5 game against Arizona College Prep.
“Everyone got to play so it was a good team effort,” Baca said. “Even some of the younger players who don’t normally get in to play got in and really held their own. I think it gets the nerves out for those types of players, which is good going into the post season.”
The Falcons had little trouble earning a victory by a spread of more than 30 points.
ALA Gilbert
Even with ALA Gilbert being one of the top ranked teams in the division, Baca said she wasn’t thrilled with how her team preformed in their last home game of the regular season.
“The first time we played ALA we lost, but the structure and the intensity was there,” Baca said. “This game I wasn’t happy with our effort. We didn’t play as well as we had before.”
The Lady Falcons started the game strong but got discourage early on.
“I think it was a little bit of them being in their head, knowing we were going against a good team,” Baca said. “We didn’t start out too bad. We hit two threes and battled back and forth. But shots started dropping and we lost momentum.”
After the game Baca addressed the loss with her team but also noted that they needed to put it behind them in order to move forward.
“We spent a good 10 minutes in the locker room talking about it and then we were done,” Baca said. “You have to get ready for state, so you can’t spend the next day’s practice on what they did wrong. We are in the state tournament right now; it is like a whole new season.”
